The Indiana Fever faced the Minnesota Lynx on Tuesday night in the Commissioner’s Cup Championship.
But on Sunday, star guard Caitlin Clark received a phone call from WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert informing her that she had been named one of the two captains for the 2025 WNBA All-Star Game.
With Clark's teammates and coaches gathered around her in the locker room during the call, Engelbert also wished the team luck for the championship game.
Clark, who has a playful personality, responded on speaker phone, "Yeah, we about to get that dub Cathy."
The whole team laughed in the moment, but fast forward to Tuesday night, and the Fever delivered. Clark was out for the third consecutive game with a groin injury but that didn't stop her teammates from showing up and showing out.
They fell behind by 13 early but fought back and never looked back. Natasha Howard led the way for Indiana with 16 points, 12 rebounds and four assists as the Fever knocked off the Lynx on the road, 74-59.
But it wasn’t just Howard who stepped up. Four of Indiana’s five starters scored in double figures, and Sophie Cunningham added 13 more off the bench.
The win showed Indiana’s belief and resilience, entering the game as 10.5-point underdogs (ESPN Bet) without Clark and facing a Lynx team with the WNBA’s best record at 14-2.
With the victory, the Fever players earned a share of $500,000 and $120,000 in cryptocurrency from Coinbase. Howard, as the MVP, picked up another $5,000.
