Even after a wicked wave of turbulence, the major indexes aren't far off their highest levels on record.
The S&P 500, up 1%, is now off 0.3% from its Oct. 8 record. The Nasdaq Composite, up 1.3%, is 0.3% from its Oct. 8 closing high. And the Dow is up 432 points, or 0.9%, which puts it 0.3% away from its 12th record close of the year.
Stocks fell sharply on Oct. 10 when President Donald Trump dialed up public trade tensions with China. The major indexes have been climbing out of that hole ever since, and a wave of worries about bad loans, especially by regional banks, added to the volatility.
