Today, Wednesday 23 July, Girona Fútbol Club celebrates its 95th birthday, a moment that invites us to look back and recognise the trajectory of a Club that has gone from being a modest entity to forming part of the elite as a member of the highest category of state football.
A humble origin with a Girona heart
Girona FC was officially founded on 23 July 1930, in a local context marked by a passion for football and the desire to consolidate a representative entity of the city. From its beginnings on the Vista Alegre pitch to its arrival at the current Montilivi stadium, the Club has always been a symbol of identity for the city and the area.
Years of overcoming
For decades, Girona struggled mostly in the lower categories, with occasional moments of glory and very hard times, including relegation, financial problems and threats of disappearance. But the fighting spirit and the loyalty of the fans kept the dream alive.
One of the main turning points came in June 2008 with promotion to Second Division A and the Club's entry into LaLiga, i.e. professional football.
History!
The most memorable moment for many fans was the historic promotion to the First Division in 2017, for the first time in the 87-year history of the Club. That season in the top flight was not only a sporting success, but also a milestone for the whole city.
After alternating seasons in Primera and Segunda, the team has been growing both in sporting and structural terms. Girona FC has not only consolidated its place in the top flight, but also qualified to play in the Champions League, an unthinkable feat just a decade ago.
A look to the future
Today, Girona FC celebrates 95 years of history with a look full of hope for the future. With a loyal fan base, a committed city, a solid sporting base and ambitious management. The Club faces its path towards the centenary with the aim of continuing to be an example of growth, perseverance and ‘orgull gironí’
The 95th birthday is not just a sporting event: it is a collective celebration of a feeling shared by thousands of people who have grown up with the red and white colours.
