Just 0.5 games separate the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox for the top American League Wild Card spot. The two bitter AL East rivals will begin a three-game set at Fenway Park on Friday.
For the Yankees, the Anthony Volpe saga has been well-documented among the media. It was reported that Volpe has been playing through a severe shoulder injury for months, and now he's on the bench for a not really known reason. Is it the shoulder that's still bothering him, or is it because of his poor play, and him holding the team back in a critical stretch of the season?
Yankees' Aaron Boone provides positive Anthony Volpe update
Yankees' skipper, Aaron Boone, spoke to the media ahead of the massive series against the Boston Red Sox, and had some things to say about Anthony Volpe's injury, and his potential impact down the stretch:
“I do. Like hopefully, in the next few days, he gets through this and he’s back in the mix. We saw him really turn it on the postseason, some of his best baseball. Hopefully that’s still ahead of him.”
It's safe to say Volpe has had a tough year in New York. The fans thought he could be the next heir apparent to Derek Jeter, and he has not only been really poor on defense, but also lacks the clutch-hitting gene.
Although he does have 19 home runs, Volpe's OPS is .661 and his average is .206 in 141 games. Strikeouts have also been an issue.
At some point, the Yankees have realized that every game is crucial, and having Volpe in the lineup has been detrimental to some of their late-inning chances.
As for Boone's remarks, we will see if Volpe is back in the mix within a couple of days, or if potential replacement Jose Caballero has a moment and Boone realizes they should go with the hot bat.
