Rick George had ‘discussions’ with Deion Sanders after two ‘awful’ games

Colorado athletic director Rick George didn’t hide his frustrations or downplay the program’s current state.

“Yeah, look, it’s been tough,” George said to Mark Johnson on the Colorado Coaches Show. “I know our fan base is, you know, up in arms and I get it. But this is a time to rally around the team. It’s not time to run away. And…look, they’re competing. I go down to practice every day. They’re working hard. And yeah, the last two games were awful. We all agree with that. But, let’s put our arms around this team right now. This is when they need the fan base the most.”

George admitted he’s had multiple ‘discussions’ with head coach Deion Sanders since the Buffaloes’ latest setbacks.

“I’ve had a lot of discussions with Coach,” he said. “And…we know what we need to do to fix it and we’ll keep moving.”

The two communicate often, not just after losses but throughout the week, all while Colorado works to steady itself amid mounting pressure and outside scrutiny.

“I just want to hear him,” George said. “I want to hear what’s on his mind and what he thinks needs to be done and where we need to go. I know football, I’ve coached it, I’ve administered it, I’ve recruited it, and we’ve got to do better. We all acknowledge that.”

George praised Sanders’ commitment despite the noise surrounding the team.

“I’m proud of Coach Prime,” he said. “It’s been a tough year for him, what he’s been through. But he’s been a trooper, he’s working hard, motivating, and doing the things I want him to do as coach. We just have to win more football games.”

He also emphasized that his sideline presence is a gesture of unity, not interference.

“Sometimes when you hear all this chatter on social media, which can be awful, I think me being down there shows them they’ve got my support,” he said. “We’re going to do everything we can to help them get through this.”

Colorado travels to Morgantown, West Virginia on Saturday. They last played on Mountaineer Field in 2009. With both teams at 3–6, the loser will no longer have a path to a bowl game.
