Young Chelsea goalkeeper Ted Curd has joined National League (i.e. fifth tier) side Boreham Wood on loan yesterday, for at least one month but probably for the entire rest of this season. Chelsea’s official announcement says that the loan is “initially” just for one month; Boreham Wood’s announcement says the he’s joining them until the end of the season.

So that’s a bit confusing, as is the part where Curd’s moving clubs outside of transfer windows, though Boreham Wood are technically in non-league, so who knows what rules do and do not apply down there. Earlier this week, they let their starting goalkeeper, Nathan Ashmore join Bedford Town on loan, which led to some fans wondering who might play goal for the Wood this weekend. Ted to the rescue!

This will be Curd’s third loan already, after spells at Hashtag United and Hampton & Richmond Borough in the last two years. The 19-year-old’s following the tried and true method of gaining experience in non-league football — the sort of experience that he cannot have playing just in Academy football or as a third goalkeeper with the first-team.

Good luck, Ted!
