Manchester United have completed the signing of Bryan Mbeumo, with the striker joining for a reported $95 million.
Mbeumo has signed a five-year contract with United, with the option of another year, and will link up with his new teammates in the USA as they take part in the Premier League Summer Series over the next 10 days.
The Athletic’s David Ornstein reported last week that United bid $87 million up front and close to $7 million in add ons to Brentford for Mbeumo and the Bees reluctantly accepted the deal as they’ve now lost their captain, goalkeeper, star striker and manager this summer.
This was becoming the saga of the summer as United wanted Mbeumo to be a key part of their new-look attack with Matheus Cunha, and now they’ve got the deal over the line.
Is Bryan Mbeumo the right type of player for Manchester United?
Ruben Amorim was clearly desperate to upgrade his attacking options after adding Cunha from Wolves earlier this summer and now he’s added Mbeumo too, as United are now reportedly focusing their attention on signing a new No. 9 to lead the line and complete the overhaul of their attack.
United’s plan to go after experienced and in-form Premier League players from midtable clubs is different from their recent strategy of paying big for potential a la Rasmus Hojlund, Leny Yoro and Patrick Dorgu.
Therefore they had to pay big money to sign those established Premier League players. Cunha adds instant quality and almost guarantees you 10 goals and 10 assists a season, while Mbeumo will add even more end product.
That injection of goals, experience and cutting edge is exactly what United need to at least scrap for a top six finish this season and Mbeumo’s arrival is huge for Amorim’s rebuild this season and beyond. He is hungry to prove he belongs at a top club and he and Cunha are exactly the type of characters United want.
Amad Diallo will also play a key role in attack in the future, but the likes of Marcus Rashford (set to join Barcelona on loan) and Alejandro Garnacho (linked with a move to Chelsea) aren’t in Amorim’s plans.
Cunha, Mbeumo, Bruno Fernandes and Diallo playing behind a top quality number nine should be a very potent attacking unit next season.
