Grizzlies-Celtics Trade Report Surfaces After Brad Stevens’ Comments

The Boston Celtics have already been busy in the trade market this offseason, but they might not be done just yet.

So far, Boston has traded Jrue Holiday to the Portland Trail Blazers and Kristaps Porzingis to the Atlanta Hawks. Furthermore, there were rumors about them potentially trading Jaylen Brown, Derrick White, and Sam Hauser, but to this point, nothing has come to fruition.

The offseason is still young, and plenty of teams around the league are continuing to make moves. While nothing is official yet, the Celtics may be one of those teams soon, specifically with the Memphis Grizzlies as a potential trade partner.

In a recent press conference, Celtics general manager Brad Stevens spoke about Anfernee Simons, who they acquired in the Holiday trade. In doing so, Stevens made it seem like Simons would be a big part of the team, even though he had already been named as a potential trade candidate.

“Anfernee is a guy people out here probably don’t see as much because of the time that they play,” Stevens told reporters, per NBC Sports Boston. “But his ability to score, to shoot the ball, make really hard shots, is pretty elite. And you look, a guy that’s 26 years old and averaged 20 a game for three straight years.”

Now, it seems that Simons might be a legitimate trade candidate after all as the Celtics might reportedly still be shopping him, alongside Georges Niang (h/t Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report).

“As we discussed, I think the Celtics are still very active in taking trade calls—maybe even making trade calls. There was some conversation last week between Memphis and Boston about something. We’re still looking to track down more info on that. But rival teams are definitely still under the impression that Boston is looking for deals involving both Anfernee Simons and Georges Niang,” Fischer said.

Nothing is official yet, but Boston remains a team to keep an eye on. They are once again slightly over the second apron, though it is much more manageable at this stage. Regardless, as they prepare for a gap year, the Celtics are not likely to be competitive next season. Even so, they still have a lot of talent and a bright future, and how they attack the rest of the offseason might directly impact their long-term outlook.
