Former Mavericks' Player Development Coach Joins the Magic: Report

The Orlando Magic made a key acquisition for their coaching staff on Wednesday. According to ESPN's Shams Charania, the Magic signed God Shammgod as an assistant coach for the 2025-26 season. The former NBA player has been a part of the NBA coaching staff for quite some time.

Before joining the Magic, Shammgod was a player development coach for the Dallas Mavericks. He joined the coaching staff in 2019 following his stint in the same role in Providence. According to reports, he played a significant role in the development of players Bryce Cotton and Kris Dunn.

Shammgod is the fifth member of Jason Kidd's coaching staff to leave following the blockbuster Luka Doncic trade.

The coaches who have left the Mavericks are Sean Sweeney, Alex Jensen, Marko Milic and Darrell Armstrong.

"Dallas Mavericks player development coach God Shammgod has agreed to join the Orlando Magic as an assistant coach, Andy Miller of Klutch Sports tells ESPN. Shammgod has worked for the Mavericks since 2019 and now receives a larger role in Orlando," Charania reported.

Shammgod will have some familiarity as he joins Jamahl Mosley's staff. Mosley was an assistant coach for the Mavericks from 2014 to 2021, before he was hired by the Orlando Magic to lead the team.

The former professional basketball player appeared in 20 games for the Washington Wizards in the 1997-98 season. During that stretch, he averaged 3.1 points on 32.8% shooting from the field. Following that, he moved to China to continue his career. He mostly played internationally before returning to the U.S. to become a coach.
