Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon came off in the 41st minute as the Magpies claimed a comprehensive 2-0 win over Athletic Bilbao at St James’ Park.
The Newcastle ace has bagged three goals in the UEFA Champions League despite firing blanks domestically, and was hoping to get his name on the scoresheet.
Unfortunately, he pulled up, and even though Newcastle boss Eddie Howe does not have all the answers now, it does not look good.
Howe said (via The Northern Echo), “I’ve not spoken to him, and I haven’t really had a full rundown from the medical team.
“It seems like a recurrence of his hip injury that has been plaguing him in recent weeks. We’ll assess that and see what damage is there.”
On Sunday, Howe revealed that Gordon had been suffering from a slight hip injury during the loss to West Ham United.
That affected him again on Tyneside as he left the pitch holding that part of his body.
Gordon’s latest injury setback means the 16-cap international star will likely be unavailable for the upcoming England games later this month, although it could allow him to rest and recover.
Surprisingly, Gordon was not the only Newcastle player who suffered an injury setback.
William Osula has been nursing an ankle injury, and despite being named on the bench for the clash against Bilbao, the Geordies announced that he wouldn’t participate.
“We’ve been in discussions with him at length about his ankle in the last few days as to whether he’s fit enough to perform to the level we need and he’s comfortable with,” said Howe.
“After a discussion, we felt it was better to withdraw him and get his ankle 100% right.”
Despite the setbacks, there was some good news for the Toons as Bruno Guimaraes managed to shake off a knock and play.
Defender Lewis Hall also made a cameo after a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
